Theodore Roosevelt Island
1967 — 2007
“The National Park Service does not intensely manage Theodore Roosevelt island, and there is currently no daily staff stationed on site. the NPS largely allows the landscape to grow and develop over time, in keeping with Olmsted, jr.'s original design intent. However, an active program aimed at controlling the spread of English Ivy is in place, as the vine poses a significant threat to young trees. In 1979, the current pedestrian footbridge was constructed, adjoining the island's west bank. As ferry service is no longer offered, the footbridge is the sole route on or off the island, and connects with a parking lot in Rosslyn, Virginia. from 1996-98, a raised boardwalk made of recycled plastic was installed as part of the trail system through the swamp located in the northeast section of the island.” — Anne E.
