Back in Place
The heroic statue of Gen. George Meade, who led the Union army at Gettysburg is back in place in Genernl George Meade Plaza at Pennsvlvania Avenue and Third Street NW after being kept in storage since 1966. It is one the busiest pieces of outdoor statuary in the city an one of the few statues of a general in which he is not on horseback. The standing figure of Meade is surrounded by a half-dozen allegorical figures remesenting Energy, Military Courage, Fame, Progtess, Chivalry and Loyalty. The plaza is on the route Meade used when he led the Army of the Potomac down Pennsylvania Avenue in the grand review at the end of the war.
